As part of our history topic, we have been learning about rationing during World War 2. Certain foods and clothes were rationed so that there was enough for everybody to get a fair share. People were encouraged to grow their own vegetables and mend old clothes.
Families adapted recipes so they could still make treats using the food they had. For example, they used carrots to make cookies. We found an old recipe and had a go at making our own, we needed grated carrot, sugar, flour, vanilla essence and butter. We mixed it all together and baked them in the oven for 20 minutes.
Later in the afternoon, we got to try them. Most of the class really enjoyed them. They didn't taste the way we thought they would. They were sweet and a little crunchy. Perfect for a afternoon sweet dessert, without using lots of sugar and chocolate, things they didn't have a lot of.
Some of us, are going to make them for our families at home.
